There's a Taurus in town

Body is in excellent condition, matches my paint , but it has been sitting for months. It might not drive. They want $500. I want to buy it and swap some parts and scrap it. This would probably be the most economical way to fix up my car. I could replace the front bumper cover, passenger mirror, passenger front wing, passenger rear door, get a roof rack and upgrade to a spoiler-ed trunk.

Here's the problem. I'll still be left with a big dent just fore of the rear passenger side tire and I'll probably just mess up the front bumper cover again as I continue to do this with every car I've owned.

still sounds like a good deal if you want to do all those other things. You'll probably get most of your money back if you scrap it or put all of your old parts back on it and sell it again for parts.

I'll have to take a closer look at it. If it has good tires on it then I'll have to think about it harder.

If you figure scrap value for the car is at least $200, that isn't a bad deal. Grab every little thing you can use, then put the thing back on craigslist and offer to part it out or sell it whole for $500. Then once you've sold off some parts and made some/all of your money back, scrap whatever is left.

Take a closer look. If it has the parts you need in good condition, buy it. You'll save money in the long run. You could part it out or save parts you may need in the near future. Scrap on one of those has to be a few hundred.

I don't need the parts though. It'd make my beater look better but not function any better that's my problem.

It is easily the most cost effective way to get these parts.

What year Taurus is it? If its a '89-91, I might buy some parts from ya for the Turd.

If it's cosmetically a better car, but not running, you could do a driveline swap (assuming the reason it isn't running isn't electrical gremlins).

It's a 2000ish model.

I'm not sure how it runs but for $500 I'm not holding out high hopes. I can guarantee that may car is much cleaner underneath. That's the reason I bought it to begin with. 13 year old New England cars tend to be rusty messes underneath.

not only that they make it hard to work on a car once they settle in.

Posted about this before, but my Taurus hasn't been great. I have a 02 with a Vulcan. It has cost so much to keep running it is ridiculous. It is all technically "wear items" except a few gaskets, but dang if it didn't need nearly every wear item. I am selling soon, but just to give you an idea: Currently at 129k. replaced the following & more: 4 struts, water pump, pulleys (squeaking like crazy - all of them), ball joint, tie rods, brakes, rusted brake line, all strut bolts (rusted out), intake mani gaskets twice, timing cover gasket (twice), valve cover gaskets (twice), trans pan gasket, oil pan gasket (all gaskets replaced because horrid leaks), oil press. sensor, and a bunch of maintenance items...

I think I remember you posting about that before. It sounds like your Taurus might not have been taken care of. I've put 60K on min in the last 3 years and it's pushing 200k cosmetics aside I've only had to do minor things to it. It's comfy, has been cheap and I like that 3.0. Went and looked at the Taurus I had mentioned and one of the parts I'd want form it is damaged. Also the for sale sign was no longer in it. So I dunno.
